I am writing as a New Yorker, independent of any organization. I am a NYC retired teacher, living on Social Security and a pension in Manhattan. I have lived on East 14th Street for 49 years. It is my home. If rents become more than 33% of my monthly income, I will not be able to afford it. There is no place I can imagine moving to. It would be a terrible betrayal of the city to push me and other middle class teachers and other retired city workers out of our homes. To strengthen the middle class community in New York that has built the city for 50 years, provide rent protections.
