I'm a senior who's been living in apartments since 1971. I've been the victim of many landlords' neglect, greed, hatefulness, etc. I've come to equate the word landlord with thief.
I've had a landlord (in Studio City, CA) accept a deposit on a vacant apartment, then I was injured - the next day - and couldn't move in. The landlord didn't return the deposit.
The management of an apartment in Montrose, CA put a Sociopathic tenant upstairs from me. I put up with incredible noise and persecution from her for a year (she'd wait until she heard me in a room beneath her, and she'd climb up on furniture and jump off). Then, when I got a lawyer and threatened the management company with a lawsuit if they renewed her lease, they had me delivered with eviction paperwork.
As for the senior's building I'm now in (in Duarte, CA), the owners handed the complex to their son who immediately drove out numerous tenants so that he could hike up rents. He immediately built an elevator outside of my apartment, cutting off all of my light (see attached photo). When I mentioned that, he said, "Well, you don't get much, so it doesn't matter." When the unprofessional, ignorant construction workers pushed a big, very heavy, chain link fence right up to my door (see attached photo), making it impossible for me to open my door and go out, I called the office to get the fence moved, threatening to call the police if it wasn't moved quickly. They eventually moved it and then posted an eviction order on my door (the next day). I got the City Counsel to stop all evictions in Duarte until the end of the year (this happened in October 2019). On January 2nd of 2020, I was served with another eviction order. I got my doctor and lawyer to send them an order to give me more time (to find another place to live), since I was/am disabled. In mid-March of that year, I was served with a third eviction notice FOR NO REASON. Because it was mid-March, and the pandemic was already declared, they couldn't evict me by law. So, I'm still here - too broke to move out - waiting to see if they're going to pull more eviction attempts. I have CPTSD. My nerves are shot, as well they should be.HOW CAN YOU PROTECT LANDLORDS LIKE THIS AND NOT TENANTS WHO ARE THEIR PREY? IT'S INSANE. WE HAVE TO HAVE TENANT PROTECTIONS, NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look at my Yelp reviews of them - It includes photos and graphic descriptions of their behavior: https://www.yelp.com/biz/huntington-oaks-village-duarteThis might also have some value to you:
