As a former renter, it is critical to require landlords who get some kinds of federal money to agree to tenant protections, like limiting rent hikes, banning evictions without good cause, and standardizing leases in over 12 million apartment units nationwide. Right now, most houses are priced so far out of reach, so many people can only rent apartments or other types of homes. Also, the rents are the result of price-gouging. What used to be an affordable 1-bedroom apartment in the Jackson, MIchigan area has bumped up to $1200/month, which is ridiculous, as they are not any more premium than they were before. Also, the homeless population has increased too, while homes are sitting vacant in many places waiting for a buyer.
