As a disabled person who depends upon my Social Security disability as my only income, I am completely priced out of the rental market because of the incredibly high rent rates. The Section 8 program in my area is completely overwhelmed by the number of people who need assistance and therefore is unavailable. The amount of increase in rent since the pandemic began has been brutal. There are so many desperate people who are facing potential eviction simply because the landlords have decided they can make more money and have therefore raised rent rates beyond people’s ability to pay. There must be an effort by the government to reign in the power that landlords have over the general public. It says in the preamble to the Constitution that the government must protect the general welfare of the people. What is more central to general welfare than housing? For people who live on fixed incomes, unreasonable rent increases can be devastating. Please add protections for tenants in the areas where the government can step in. Thank you!
