    Government-backed loans should always have had a set of tenant protections required for such backing. These protections should include regulations on rent hikes and evictions (especially no cause evictions), housing safety requirements (and speed of addressing problems reported), bans on discrimination, and more. If enacted, they could benefit over 12.4 million rental homes across the country and slow the growth of homelessness.
