I have been a renter my whole life. Every year when my lease is coming up for renewal, I face the fear of not knowing how much my rent will be raised, and if I will be forced to move again. In my current apartment in Chicago, I do not even know who actually owns this building, and the agency who runs it has not been easy to deal with or forthcoming with answers about the actual landlord. It is managed entirely by a go-between, a manager. A landlord registry is vital for protecting renters like me who do not even know the person or business who legally controls the space where we live and makes the decisions that control our lives.
