Everyone I know has at least one landlord horror story, including my friends who rent only from small landlords. Even a homeowner who rents out part of their home to pay the mortgage can be an abusive landlord. I've seen landlords show up in people's homes without notice, deny qualified subletters, refuse to make repairs for months, change the rent without warning, and far more - and I've seen tenants go along with it because they're afraid that the landlord won't renew the lease if they assert their rights. We need more tenant rights and better enforcement, and if a landlord was only able to afford their rental property because of a federally backed mortgage, it is the federal government's right and responsibility to hold those landlords to reasonable and respectful behavior.
