At the very least, we need rent control in the form of a cap on rental rates and increases, and guarantees of safe housing free of all pests with efficient appliances and heating/cooling systems. Rental rates should be based on square footage set by cities, towns, and regions. This should be calculated equitably and could be subsidized by various methods. No residents should fear retaliation from property owners due to Board of Health and repair complaints. No residents should live in fear of unlimited rent increases. What good are renters rights if they don't include safe housing and rental rate protections!
