I am a Newport, Kentucky resident. This city is running out of affordable housing and I feel it is because there are not enough protections for the longtime residents who made Newport what it is today. I am part of a tenant's union that formed in northern Kentucky recently and was co-founded by someone displaced by Sunset Property Solutions (SPS for short), a corporation that bought one of the last affordable apartment communities in Newport (Victoria Square) and mass-evicted tenants six days after the sale, after publicly promising not to displace anyone. These tenants did nothing wrong other than live in a property that SPS wanted to charge significantly higher rent for, and were there better tenant protections in the state of Kentucky, this could have been preventable as it was eviction without a just cause.
