I have lived in rental units overrun with cockroaches, units where I have had to pay nearly all of my income to rent, units where there are child-sized holes in the floor and ceiling, units where the door is off the hinge, units without A/C--this is the standard, not the exception, to my experience as a renter, and multiple places I have rented from have received Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans. The FHFA should attach to their loans: rent regulations to limit egregious rent hikes, good cause eviction protections, a ban on source of income discrimination, stronger antidiscrimination protections, safe, quality, accessible housing standards, and a right to organize. FHFA should also create a landlord registry, standardized and tenant-friendly lease terms, and an Office of Tenant Protections.
