I am very concerned about the increase in displaced citizens in communities all across the nation as rent/mortgage costs continue to climb. The term "affordable" has become a relative term as more corporations move into urban cities to purchase and renovate abandoned homes due to the higher cost of living. Developers are designing living spaces that "price out" the most vulnerable residents (low-income families). I find myself (in a process of divorce) having to remain in the apartment with my estranged husband because of the constant challenge of trying to find an "affordable" place to live that isn't in an unsafe neighborhood and where the waiting list isn't 4-5 years long. Those of us that make less than $50K per year are at extreme risk of homelessness in a very short period of time. So what are we to do? The current path of higher rental costs and fewer available private rental options will bring displaced citizens to a critical and dangerous point. More should be done, there's a need for more affordable housing now - our communities are at stake.
