I am writing to encourage an increase and/or expansion in protections for tenants of property owners with federally-backed mortgages. While capitalism and a misunderstanding of how economics works causes government bureaucrats to prioritize owners over renters, it's actually the renter who drives the rental real estate economy, just as its the worker-consumer who drives the retail economy. Owners do not contribute their personal capital to the financial equation that results in taxes or interest paid to the federal or state government, they simply use their exclusive access to capital stores and the property value as leverage/collateral when applying for mortgages. Owners are merely conduits, funnels, taking their cut for their private administration of what is essentially public "affordable" housing, when the fact is, cooperative ownership/admin by tenant residents could take the action with likely more humane results, if only the government were to concern itself with community prosperity building instead of wealth extraction for its corporate handlers. An overall cash flow analysis shows that system for what it is- I'm not making unproven accusations- so I see that there's a better way for the government to conduct its affairs, since government is supposed to work for the good of the many. In that view, until the government actually becomes what the public needs it to be- an institution that builds sustained agency for the public as community, not as individual consumers- I think the government must make sure its tenants are fully protected from eviction, retaliation, and unhealthy conditions imposed upon its tenant by its private 'middleman' ownership class. To see that the full scope of protections holds up, due direct enforcement of the law must be enacted to keep owners/landlords accountable. I have seen the government treat impoverished people with such inhuman disdain and the taking of their liberty for committing minor infractions or for infractions that were not fully within their power to prevent or control when we account for social determinants. Yet I have seen owners and landlords maliciously harm several tenants simultaneously through inhumane treatment and conditions without any due process of law appropriately holding those owners responsible so that justice can prevail. This horrid dichotomy is quite telling as to who the government really protects and why. The people know that elected officials protect the people who bribe/lobby them, and the people know that corporate real estate owners and operators lobby those officials. I sincerely hope that whoever reads this note understands what to do about that problem. My fellow citizens and our resident neighbors need justice. Thank you.
