The Massachusetts Mortgage Bankers Association appreciates the opportunity to pride input (attached) to the FHFA on issues facing qualified mortgage borrowers with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). We urge FHFA not to amend the Uniform Residential Loan Application (URLA) to include a question regarding the language preference of potential borrowers. We have several concerns, including that when a question is asked to a consumer about language preference as part of the application process, there is an implied impression that the lender would then be able to communicate and provide documentation in his/her preferred language.

Our members remain committed to working with FHFA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and other government agencies to identify challenges unique to LEP borrowers and develop solutions that expand access to sustainable homeownership. Amending the URLA as has been proposed would only undermine these efforts.

We thank you for your consideration of these comments.

    Sincerely,
    Deborah Sousa, Executive Director
