There is a growing body of evidence, now well documented and researched in the private sector, among non-partisan peer reviewed institutions and universities and by federal and state governments that shows the role energy efficiency plays in real estate, including residential. In residential, this manifests itself in several ways, including overall home value, liquidity and cash flow pressures at the family level, and subsequent default risk, particularly for those borrowers who are already at the most risk in markets that are economically depressed.
A requirement for energy efficiency evaluation of homes prior to financing approval is the next logical progression for the lending industry and would have an enormously positive effect on local economies through job creation. These are the types of jobs that can't be sent overseas and are the type that are most needed in these economically depressed areas.
